This position enhances the teammate experience and HSS's mission through supporting TASER and De-Escalation Training. This role supports an internal cadre of certified Trainers and other Functional Trainers dependent upon need. As a member of the Talent and Culture team, this position is responsible for supporting the processes and procedures to maintain compliance with HSS internal required Functional Training. This position will ensure the sustainability of the internal Instructor Cadre and support sites in proactively monitoring training compliance and scheduling.

In partnership with the Lead, Tactical Training & Quality; business unit leadership; Internal Trainers, & Compliance Administrator; the Functional Training Specialist is responsible for providing logistical support for the proactive planning and delivery of required TASER and De-Escalation training and certifications.

This position must have a strong customer service orientation and be effective at communicating with employees, leaders, and working across departmental lines. This position operates in a strong team-based environment where collaboration is critical for fulfilling the needs of the business, and also relies heavily on individual execution and delivery.


Trainer Certification & Inventory (30% of time):

  • Partners with site leaders to provide full support to HSS internal TASER & De-Escalation certified instructors to build and sustain an internal instructor cadre sufficient to ensure internal compliance with training requirements.
  • Gains and maintains Trainer and Master Trainer Certifications as necessary.
  • Delivers full certification training to new HSS officers and/or leaders in roles requiring TASER & De-Escalation Training.
  • Delivers recertification activities in alignment with HSS policies.
  • Collaborates with HSS certified trainers to schedule and deliver regular intervals of training to HSS officers.
  • Maintains the Training Plan for assigned market certified trainers, aligning to the standard training or educational mechanisms and defines the target audiences for each training approach.
  • Monitors progress of training activities of HSS certified trainers to ensure that all training objectives are met and follows training requirements based on HSS policies.
  • Responsible for maintaining TASER inventory in both the Field and Corporate Office to include TASER Devices, targets, etc.
  • Identifies opportunities to streamline inventory costs and improve processes.

Internal HSS Training & Quality Support(50% of time):
  • Serves as main point of contact for TASER & De-Escalation Training.
  • Prepares and provides TASER & De-Escalation Training Programs as a key part of the HSS internal instructor Cadre.
  • Partners with Lead, Tactical Training & Quality to serve as a certified trainer for Functional Training programs as needed to maintain classroom capacity to ensure compliance across HSS.
  • Delivers TASER & De-Escalation training to HSS internal teammates as needed to maintain compliance.
  • Delivers Functional Training programs to HSS internal teammates as needed to maintain compliance.
  • Identifies system or process improvements that increase efficiency, effectiveness, & compliance.
  • Follows procedures, standards, and expectations for planning and tracking of compliance training.

Training Reporting, Coordination & Logistics (30% of time):
  • Partners with the Lead, Tactical Training & Quality, Training Compliance Coordinator, and LMS Analyst to support the use of the LMS as an Enterprise system of record for Functional/Tactical Training and training schedules.
  • Serves as main point of contact for training scheduling and logistics within assigned market and other areas as needed. Ensures accurate and efficient documentation of Functional/Tactical training programs.
  • Monitors training status to ensure compliance with HSS and HSS customer policies.
  • Schedules full certification training for new HSS officers/leaders.
  • Communicates and schedules HSS certified trainer recertification activities according to HSS policies.
  • Provides monthly/quarterly results assessments of training productivity.
  • Maintains contact with HSS certified trainers to assist them with administrative and instructional support as needed.
  • Develops training schedules and coordinates training resources.
  • Provides program support to officers and trainers as needed following delivery of initial training.
  • Works with stakeholders to ensure compliance by administering various schedules, paperwork, and communications.
  • Identifies system or process improvements that increase efficiency, effectiveness, & compliance.
  • Establishes procedures, standards, and expectations for planning and tracking of compliance training.

  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.
  • Revises, updates and modifies existing curriculum and programs as well as develop new curriculum, programs training aids and delivery mediums.
  • Develops and delivers additional training sessions, content, and techniques, as needed, to support regulatory initiatives and business enhancements to systems and processes.

  • B achelors degree plus 5 years of related training experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to become an expert in HSS programs in order to effectively present various training courses and adapt them, as needed.
  • Prefer 2-4 years in a role that involved at least 40% of time as a crisis de-escalation and Tactical instructor .
  • Certification in Basic Firearms, Range Safety, and Handcuff Instructor, preferred.
  • Appropriate handgun instructor-level training qualification or obtain within 6 months of hire.
  • Certification in CPI and Axon TASER preferred or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.
  • Ability to be tased when attending and/or leading training with either of these devices.
  • Ability to meet HSS' psychological standards to carry firearms.
  • At least 21 years of age.
  • Own or ability to obtain weapon that meets HSS standards to be used during training.
  • Excellent presentation and platform skills and up to date knowledge of contemporary training modalities.
  • Strong interpersonal skills including listening, oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to interact with diverse personalities while exercising tact and flexibility.
  • Ability to identify and analyze problems, exercise independent judgment, resourcefully innovate, recommend and lead effective courses of action.
  • Ability to organize, prioritize, coordinate, implement and manage complex or multiple projects and tasks in a rapidly changing, fast paced environment in conjunction with day-to-day activities.
  • Ability to evaluate skills, identify development opportunities and provide effective coaching.
  • Clear understanding of adult learning theory, instructional design, and principles of effective communication.
  • Proficient in MS Office, including Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Familiarity with Learning Management Systems.
  • Basic math skills that allows for general data gathering and reporting on findings.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to meet HSS driving requirements.


This is a full-time position. Work hours will vary depending on client schedules, project deadlines, and the needs of the company. Workweeks may exceed 40 hours. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand. Environment may be fast paced and stressful. Approximately 50-75% travel local and domestic overnight travel may be required and may include one or more of the following: Day and/or Overnight, by plane and/or car.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee will spend approximately 75% of the time sitting and will walk or sit 25% of the time; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; occasionally the employee will stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move objects up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
